Tips and Tricks for Using Concealed Carry Coats and Jackets
On August 10, 2023 by Walter PowellMany CCW permit holders choose to carry a handgun in their jacket pockets. While this is a great option for outdoor carry, ensuring your cover garment can conceal a gun and allow quick access to it is essential.
Choose A Jacket With A Curved Front.
The curved front of most suit jackets works against concealed carry because it makes it easier for the wind to flap open and expose your firearm holster. You can solve this problem by sewing fishing weights to the bottom front corners of your suit jacket, which adds weight that will resist the wind and allows you to flip the fabric out of the way before drawing your weapon. Another way to prevent the wind from exposing your gun is by choosing concealed carry coats and jackets that are water-resistant and windproof. This will help you stay warm in cold weather while protecting your gun and allowing you to access it when needed quickly. Finding a jacket that fits well but is tight enough. If a jacket is too tight, it will bind and constrict the area where you must draw your weapon – especially in the shoulder/arm area.
Add Fishing Weights To The Bottom Front Corners.
Adding weights to the bottom front corners of a jacket can help reduce printing by keeping the pistol from shifting around. This is especially important when carrying a larger gun. Adding the weights to both the right and left corners of the jacket will help ensure the gun stays concealed when you draw. The jacket you carry should have interior pockets for ambidextrous access and be secured by closure like zippers or snaps. Also, look for a jacket made from a textured fabric, such as herringbone, birdseye, or rough tweed, that helps break up lines.
Don’t Wear A Jacket With A Long Hem.
A long hem on a jacket will expose your firearm to the world before you can clear cover or draw your pistol. This is why blazers and sport coats work better as concealed carry garments than parka-style jackets.
Another option is a vest worn with a jacket, especially in cold weather. These usually come in dark colors and don’t expose a large part of the front of your body, making them good concealed carry choices.
Finally, concealment shirts combine polyester and spandex into a fitted shirt with built-in holster pockets under each arm. These are great alternatives to shoulder holsters and offer the flexibility of IWB or OWB carry. Experiment with different clothing to find what works best for you.
Choose A Jacket With A Zipper Under The Placket.
A great concealed carry jacket is made to effectively conceal a firearm in its pockets (and even have dedicated magazine pouches for ambidextrous users), resist the elements, provide comfort, and look good. They should have several well-designed interior carry pockets, backup mag storage, and be easy to use and operate when wearing gloves. The zipper should be positioned so it doesn’t catch on anything else. The zipper should be long enough to close the entire pocket but not so long that it’s dragging on the ground. It also shouldn’t snag on things like belts, hats, backpack straps, or the ties of bags. It’s also a good idea to stitch around the edges of the zipper tape so that it’s more durable. To do this, work with the wrong side of the zipper tape. Then, wrap it with fabric and stitch along the wrapped edge. You can trim the seam and clip the corner so it’s nice and sharp when finished.
