Tips for Creating a Montessori Homeschool

The Montessori approach to learning centers around giving the children control of their environment and letting them take the reins for their growth and exploration. The child has the freedom to explore various activities and choose the ones that speak to them. Creating a Montessori atmosphere for your homeschool takes some planning, but with the following tips, you’ll have it ready in no time.

Create Natural Learning Opportunities

Montessori learning can happen year-round when you look for opportunities throughout the different seasons. Summer school Redmond WA allows for loads of outdoor activities, while the colder months can enhance the learning indoors. Include your children in the cooking, cleaning and household planning so they can learn life skills while learning math and reading.

Give Choices

You can create themes for your school units and within those units have a variety of activities for your children to choose from. Let them pick the books to read or games to play to give them a sense of independence and success. Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. All you need to do is optimize the environment for them.

Set Up a Child-Friendly Home

The Montessori approach is all about experimentation. Have an abundance of art supplies, child-size cooking tools, science equipment and gardening implements to encourage your children to explore their environment. Allow them to use what they want at any time and watch their minds expand with knowledge.

Schedule School Time

Uninterrupted times for learning can enhance the Montessori experience in your home. Always choose hands-on activities and keep the sessions short and frequent. This prevents frustrations and keeps fun at the forefront of daily life.

The Montessori philosophy promotes a positive learning mindset focused on growth and a child’s personal accomplishments instead of trying to fit them into a societal mold.
